Seasonal Allergies

Changes in the seasons bring with them renewal and growth.  However, they are also associated with changes in weather, plant pollination and exfoliation of leaves, all of which are triggers for various allergies.  Those who suffer from seasonal allergies know how disruptive and intolerable they can be.

What is an allergy?

An allergy is an exaggerated reaction of the immune system.  The role of the immune system is to protect the body from invasive foreign elements.   Sometimes this system is overly sensitive and overreacts to everyday stimuli in the environment that usually do not cause any reaction at all.

An allergic reaction is caused by the invasion of an allergen in the body which activates antibodies of the IgE type.  This, in turn, results in a series of chemical processes that activate mast cells.  These cells release many chemical substances, among them histamine.  They also cause allergic symptoms such as itchiness, sneezing, watery eyes, rashes, and in the case of asthma, shortness of breath, coughing and phlegm.

There are a group of allergic diseases referred to as atopic diseases, among them:  hay fever, asthma, and atopic dermatitis.   Common allergens include dust mites, pollen, mold and fungi, animal fur and feathers and certain types of food, including milk, eggs, peanuts, artificial food preservatives, food coloring and various medications.

Many individuals respond to seasonal and weather changes with extreme allergic reactions that cause great suffering and a decrease in quality of life.

Conventional treatment

Conventional treatments for allergies treat the allergic symptoms and include, among other things, antihistamines and steroids taken by mouth, inhalers or in creams, drops and other medications to reduce stuffiness; adrenaline (in cases of life-threatening allergies), anti- leukotrienes; and vaccines (injection of allergens in various dosages). 

Naturopathic treatment for seasonal allergies

The main goal of naturopathic treatment is to prevent allergies that reoccur with every change in the seasons. In the event of an allergic reaction, the objective is to get through it as quickly as possible and to prevent a recurrence.  Those who suffer from allergies need to learn to recognize triggers and bodily reactions in order to prepare for changes in the seasons as follows.

  • Undergo a short detoxification process - 2-3 weeks prior to the end of a season
  • Begin the morning with a glass of hot water, the juice of half a lemon and a slice of lemon, on an empty stomach
  • Consume foods that strengthen the immune system:

Those that contain vitamin C, such as kiwi, red peppers, green leaves and broccoli in addition to lemon

Those that include beta-carotene, such as orange vegetables that have been cooked and ground

  • Increase consumption of allergen reducing foods such as apples, red onion and nigella
  • Increase consumption of anti-inflammatory foods that include essential fatty acids such as fish from the Northern Sea, sardines, fresh garlic, flax seeds, chia seeds, turmeric, fresh almonds and walnuts
  • Increase consumption of ginger, cinnamon and cardamom
  • Increase high fiber foods and plant protein- lentils, beans, whole rice, quinoa, chick peas, pearl barley, etc.
  • Avoid food allergens such as wheat, milk and milk products, soya, peanuts, corn, eggs and other foods known to trigger specific allergies
  • In cases of increased phlegm, stuffy nose or other symptoms of asthma, increase consumption of foods known to reduce these effects-parsley, celery, radishes, cabbage and kohlrabi
  • Decrease foods that cause phlegm, such as citrus fruits (with the exception of lemon), bananas, avocado, peanuts and sugars
  • Avoid products that weaken the immune system

Simple sugars and carbohydrates such as white flour and sugar

Animal products- meat, fish, milk

Processed foods

Alcohol and tobacco

  • Use natural creams with olive oil or Calendula base
  • Many herbs are available for treatment according to specific type of allergy and area of the body affected


A healthy drink for those suffering from seasonal allergies

  • Ginger root (2 cc.) – remember ginger can increase blood pressure so for those who suffer from blood pressure please avoid using it.
  • 1/2 t. Glycyrrhizin
  • 1 stick of cinnamon
  • 1 t. dry nettle plant
  • 1 cup water
  • Boil the water with the ginger and Glycyrrhizin in a small covered pan
  • Lower the heat and continue cooking for 10 minutes
  • Remove from heat and add other ingredients
  • Wait 10 minutes, strain and drink
  • Can be sweetened with a bit of natural, organic honey or maple syrup
