" DISINFECTING – One of the Most Important Acne Remedies!"
- Riki Hakim
What is Cystic Acne? Even if you have been using a good acne face wash and other acne remedies on a regular basis, acne pimples can sometimes grow inflamed or infected, becoming large and filled with pus. Such severe acne is called cystic acne. Usually less common than ordinary hormonal acne, the sebaceous (oil) gland under the skin develops an infection. Your acne pimples become red, swollen, and painful to the touch, as these bacterial infections runs deeper into the skin, creating a more painful bump. If a cyst bursts, the infection can spread, causing more breakouts
What are Typical Treatments for Infected Cysts? Dermatologists sometimes prescribe oral antibiotics or other drugs (e.g. isotretinoin, which carries rather serious side effects, or spironolactone) to treat the condition systemically. Unfortunately however, cystic acne may not respond to antibiotics, or they may stop working after a while. Even if effective, the use of antibiotics can carry unpleasant side effects, such as upset stomach, diarrhea, and vaginal infections. Long term use of antibiotics can lead to the danger of antibiotic resistance or bacterial resistance, i.e. the creation of bacteria in your body that are harder to kill.
Who Tends to Get Cystic Acne? This condition is more likely to develop when you are in your teens or early 20’s, but can also be a result of adult acne. It is more common among men than women and is usually a worsening of face, back, upper arm, or chest acne. You may also notice pimples becoming infected where the hair lies on the face or clothing rubs against it, irritating the sebaceous cyst. In any case, some people are more subject to their acne becoming infected than others.
Creams, lotions, and gels containing retinoid are also sometimes prescribed to help unplug pores. However many people find retinoid to be rather harsh on their skin, causing redness, dryness and irritation, and even sometimes crusting or blistering. It is also very important to avoid the sun if you are using retinoids.
Some women and teenage girls can be helped by taking birth control pills, which regulate the hormones that cause hormonal acne.
Exfoliation to Help Prevent Cystic Acne Acne develops into infections largely when pores become clogged, allowing bacteria to grow and accumulate. Thus a good way to prevent acne lesions from becoming infected is to administer frequent facials that remove the dead skin cells that accumulate on the surface of the face and in pores. This practice, called exfoliation, helps unclog pores and leaves healthy new cells on the skin’s surface. It is also useful for blackhead removal. Exfoliation is typically achieved either by mechanical (rubbing with a mild abrasive) or chemical (the use of mild acids) means.
